Cathy took this picture of Paul and Me in Ercoluem, another Roman city that was destroyed at the same time as Pompei. Pompei was covered in with the equivilent of dust whiel ercoluem was covered with boiling-hot mud (I am not sure at what temperature mud boils at, but it does pretty good as far as imagery). Because the mud came down from teh volcano and ozzed into every inch of the city, it was very well preserved, even better than Pompei.

A very pretty courtyard at the Villa of Mysteries in Pompei. The amazing thing about Pompei and Ercoluem is that unlike msot other ruins, these cities are not ruins. The streets, walls and sometimes even rooves were all left intact. They feel real cities, the only thing these cities lack are a population...It did nto really strike me until I was walking down a street in pompei and there was a fork int he road and I had to decide which way I should go. One is not confronted with such a question in ruins...

A different angle of the same courtyard with Rachel in the sun.
