Adriana's Villa and Etruscan TombsAdriana's Villa and Etruscan Tombs
Shanon and Jodie, two students from CSU Sonoma, pose for a picture in Tarquinia, an ancient Etruscan city. The Etruscans lived in Italy before the Romans, and were wiped out and/or assiminlated by teh Roman Empire.

A picture of me, John, in front of an entrance to an Etruscan tomb. The Etruscans carved burial cities out of (relatively) soft volcanic rock. These particular tomb houses were built in the shape of a domed cyclinder.
On our way home from Rome, we stopped at Adriana's (Hadrian's) Villa, a place where the Roman Emperor could get away from the hustle and bustle of Rome. Judging by the size his "Playland," I think he was richer than God. The villa, acres and acres, has only by partially excavated, to find artificial lakes, orchards, baths, palaces, waterfalls, and libraries.
This is a detail of Roman construction. The colum and architrave are built of inexpensive brick and then covered with more expensive marble.
Eccolo, the artificial lake. Those are people waaaay down there...
